From Our Website

At GBN we believe that relationships are key to learning. We also know that young children learn best through play and exploration in safe, beautiful and natural environments. We are committed to hiring professional educators who know what to do and how to do it to maximize your child's potential. They are intentional and loving. They care about each child and individualize learning. Our teachers respect the child's culture and language and create meaningful family and community connections. The Gertrude B. Nielsen Center has been influenced by the principals of the Reggio Emilia Approach to the education of children birth-six.

When a volunteer is in the classroom, the children receive the benefit of extra care and attention. They also learn about things from the past, experience someone else's talents and talk to someone who thinks the world of him/her. For the volunteer, their life is enriched by the relationships and connections formed with the children, parents, and staff. Each hug, smile, picture and word that a child gives a volunteer is a special gift. A volunteer may come from different walks of life and our children benefit from experiences with people of diverse ages and cultures.

Welcome to the Gertrude B. Nielsen Child Care and Learning Center. What an honor it is to be a part of such an established and highly acclaimed child care center. Providing the highest quality of care for children is our main priority. Children between six weeks to six years old, develop the foundation for the love of learning that they will carry with them throughout their lives. From the moment you enter, you understand our mission of parent partnership and the vision of a "home away from home."

A full day means fewer transitions so your child can focus on learning without the frequent interruptions of half-day programs that require before and after school care. More time means more opportunity for in-depth learning, providing children with the skills they need to excel in first grade and beyond. We have weekly music and geography enrichment programs, computer learning games and computer research opportunities. Our curriculum is tailored to fit your child's interests, needs and abilities so he or she can work at his or her own developmental level.

In GBN's preschool programs my son has blossomed. He's learned about letters and sounds, and also about good play and how to share. He's learning to read and to add numbers, and also about how to be a good friend and to be kind to others. The preschool program is designed to develop the total child. Through varied experiences we meet your child's individual needs through developmentally appropriate activities that prepare your child for kindergarten and the years that follow. Our program encourages your child to develop a self-identity by relating with classmates and the environment.

My daughter is in the infant program and GBN made my transition back to work so much smoother. I knew my daughter was in good hands with a loving, caring staff. Infancy is one of the most important times in a person's life. When building a house, the most critical component is the foundation. When that structure is strong, it will support the house and its future additions. During a child's first year of life, the foundation for future development is established. We offer an atmosphere where infants receive intimate, secure care to establish a strong foundation for their development.

Our goals for your toddler are a positive self-concept and independence. With this as his foundation, your child will have the basis for learning that helps him achieve his greatest potential in the following preschool years. Toddlers are passing through one of the key phases in sensory/perceptual development. Activity time is set aside daily for sensory experiences. Some examples are: water table, sand table, play dough, cornmeal, fabric textures, cornstarch and water, bubbles and shaving cream.

The staff and personnel are amazing. It feels like 'home'. When your child does not want to leave at the end of the day and asks to be 'first' every morning, you know he loves it and it gives you peace of mind knowing there is no other place he'd like to be. We transform our indoor gym into a classroom that is set up with a variety of learning centers including literacy, math, science, dramatic play and social studies. We also have the opportunity of using our kindergarten classroom on a daily basis for special activities including woodworking, crafts such as sewing, large block play and for other large group projects.
