In the Fall of 2008, Rainbow Riders received grant awards from Virginia Tech VT and the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center CRC. The grants will allow Rainbow Riders to expand operations by constructing a new facility that is expected to open in August, 2009. The new building will be situated on CRC property just down the road from the current location.

From Our Website
Interested in enrolling? The first step is to click on the Enroll tab on the right and provide information about your child. When your submission is received, an acknowledgement will be sent to your email address. Typically, we will only contact you when we get to your child's name on the waiting list and can offer you a position. Rainbow Riders keeps a waiting list to enroll new families into our programs at Knollwood and CRC sites. When openings become available in a particular age group, we go to our waiting list to fill the spot.
In 2016, Rainbow Riders partnered with TAP Head Start to open an Early Head Start Partnership program. The program is located in the Education wing of St. Michael Lutheran Church (SMLC) and provides full time care for up to 16 children ages 6 weeks to 3 years old. There is a separate waiting list for this program that has eligibility requirements that include: all parents living in the home, must be working or in school, and a total household income less than the federal poverty guidelines (about $1,200/month for a family of 4).
Located at 307 North Knollwood Drive, our building was designed with a great deal of collaboration and planning with teachers, families, other professionals and with influence from Reggio Emilia, Italy. Both Knollwood and CRC sites are located close to Virginia Tech campus and the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (CRC) with easy access to the 460 bypass. The Knollwood site is a 14,000 square feet facility with 12 class groups for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years are in two separate buildings.
Rainbow Riders CRC site was also designed with inspirations from Reggio Emilia, Italy and with the experience of "living" in the Knollwood site for ten years. This 20,000 square feet facility can accommodate up to 240 children ages 6 weeks to 12 years in 15 class groups. Centrally located beside the large lobby area, the studio and library provide additional spaces for small groups of children to convene. The lower level of the building is for part and full time preschool classrooms as well as the school-age program.
Families are the center of the child's life and therefore the best resource and support system. Our collaboration requires ongoing communication between families as we share ideas, methods, and values. One of the many things you'll find unique about Rainbow Riders is the Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs). We hope that every family will join our PTA and/or volunteer in the program for 2-3 hours each year. When families get involved at Rainbow Riders, everyone benefits - especially our children.
Rainbow Riders has been serving children and families in the New River Valley since 1986. We embrace the diversity of our families and teachers and create a welcoming community where everyone is respected and valued. Through innovative practices, our professional teaching staff implement a creative, emergent curriculum that promotes play, critical thinking, self-regulation, and results in a life-long love for learning. Children are strong, competent, and active learners with a need to learn and a right to reach their fullest potential.
Early childhood educators have a profound impact on young children and their families. As professionals at Rainbow Riders, we take this responsibility very seriously. Our teachers and administrators are committed to making every child's experience here meaningful and impactful. We work together to support each other as we grow and learn alongside the children each day. We play, teach, document, nurture and love the children. And it is our mission to not only teach, but to have fun every day! Rainbow Riders values our teachers as the most important element of a high quality program as the day-to-day interactions, communication, curriculum and environment are guided by the teachers.
Rainbow Riders has three locations in Blacksburg. Full time programs for infants through preschoolers, part time preschool programs, and school-age programs provide a variety of options for families. In addition, our school-age programs provide experiences for Kindergarten through 5 the grade students before and after school as well as when Montgomery County Public Schools are closed. Summer school-age day camps provide a wide-range of active learning experiences, field trips, and plenty of fun! Whether in full time, part time or summer programs, Rainbow Riders philosophy of creating a stimulating learning environment is visible.
